When Change Can't Wait

I integrate two evidence-informed and highly effective models of intervention: the ARISE  ® Invitational Model and the Johnson Model. Both approaches can help families reach even the most resistant loved ones with compassion and structure.

The ARISE ® Invitational Model

The ARISE Model is a compassionate, family-centered approach rooted in transparency and collaboration. Rather than a surprise meeting, it begins with an invitation to participate in the recovery process.

Core principles:

  • Encourages open participation from the start, reducing defensiveness and shame.

  • Involves family and friends in ongoing recovery planning.

  • Focuses on healing the entire family system—not just the individual struggling with addiction.

  • Promotes accountability, long-term engagement, and sustainable recovery.

This model is ideal when maintaining relationships and trust is essential and when the goal is to bring everyone together in a spirit of love and mutual healing.

The Johnson Model

The Johnson Model is a more structured, directive approach designed for situations where the individual is in denial or actively resistant to help.

Core principles:
  • Involves detailed preparation and coaching for each family member.

  • Includes a carefully facilitated, professionally guided meeting—often unannounced—to ensure clarity, safety, and compassion.

  • Focuses on presenting a unified message of love, concern, and the clear need for immediate treatment.

When handled with care and clinical sensitivity, the Johnson Model can lead to powerful breakthroughs and treatment acceptance.

TESTIMONIALS

Here are a few words from my past clients:

“In November 2023, I sought the help of Kim Hurd through the Arise Intervention method. After two decades of struggling with my husband's addiction, I was desperate and deeply concerned about my well-being and the impact his addiction was having on our entire family. Kim helped organize weekly family meetings, providing a platform for us to share our concerns, challenges, and learn about addiction. These meetings have allowed us to support each other through this process, with the goal of changing the trajectory of addiction within our family. Kim's patience, knowledge, and support have been invaluable. She has been available whenever needed, including evenings and weekends. Her guidance has been crucial in getting my husband into treatment and helping our family understand that, although we cannot control his addiction, we can support each other in achieving our own serenity. For anyone struggling with addiction, I strongly recommend the services of Kim Hurd and the Arise method to support and guide you through these challenges.”

“As our 6 months come to a close with the ARISE program I want to thank you for all of your help, support and resources. If it wasn't for you and the program I believe my step-son would not be here today. YOU and the ARISE model helped the entire family get through his addiction. We all were all impacted on different levels and you helped us identify how we were enabling him and how he was manipulating us and how not to go back into old habits. I'll be honest, it was not an easy journey, he had ups and downs and you were there for us every step of the way. You were there via text, phone call, email and emergency family meetings at any time of the day or night.  I know multiple family members contacted you and you were always supportive, positive and gave professional advice. You are an inspiration to us all, supportive and a life saver. Thank you again for all that you've done over the past 6 months!!! You saved a life, actually many lives.”
